LO1: Report on audio analyses.

Introduction.

In this report I will be talking about what audio products I have researched and analysed.

I have researched and analysed True blood dead until dark audiobook, “This is Hallam Fm” jingle, The Archers radio drama, Ten walls mini mix by Annie Mac podcast and Nick Grimshaw’s radio show.

Purpose.

The purpose of an audiobook is to entertain listeners by having someone read a book to you instead of having to read it yourself. The narration of an audio product makes it easier for the audience and more enjoyable. I know that the product isn't informing anything as the audio book i analysed 'True Blood Dead Until Dark.' the narrator shows clearly that the story is made up and is created to pleasure the listeners and keep them engaged which connotes that it is to entertain.

The purpose of a jingle is usually to advertise but the jingle “This is Hallam Fm” which I analysed is to inform listeners what they are listening to. This is so that when they tune into the station they will quickly realise what station they are listening to as the jingle is played quite frequently, this will also bring the average audience listeners up because they may start tuning into the same station on a regular basis.

A radio drama is created to entertain people of a certain audience, it is the same as a TV drama but not visual. The radio frame "The Archers." connotes that it is to entertain with it's drama, if something is dramatic more people will be intrigued to listen.

The majority of podcasts are to entertain and are not very often formal, 'Ten walls mini mix by Annie Mac' which I analysed is very chilled out and relaxed like most podcasts I have researched and listened to. A podcast can be downloaded so it's purpose is to be downloaded and listened to in order for the audience to feel relaxed and engage the listener in thought.

Radio shows can have different purposes, some are to entertain and some are informative which connotes it is formal, most radio shows I have listened to are very laid back and entertaining, for example Nick Grimshaw.

Form and Style.

The form and style of 'True Blood Dead Until Dark' can be seen as formal and informal, the narrator uses a clear crisp voice and talks properly but when she is speaking the voice of a character she uses slang to show the personality and background of the character which connotes it is more informal and relaxed. The audiobook isn't serious and it is used for pleasure which connotes it's informality.

The jingle I analysed can not be compared to the audiobook because it is a completely different thing. The jingle "This is Hallam FM" can be seen as formal as it is informing the audience which radio station they are tuned into.

The form and style of 'The Archers' radio drama can be seen as both formal and informal, it is informal as the show is created to pleasure the audience but the class of the characters are quite upper class, I know this because of the way the characters talk to each other, the voice and language which comes across as quite high class. Also the music used at the start is quite orchestral which stereotypically connotes fairly formal people.

The podcast 'Ten Walls Mini Mix By Annie Mac' comes across as quite informal as slang language is used and words like "Alright" and "okay" which gives quite a relaxed feel to the show. Also The way the presenter Annie Mac communicates with her audience is very friendly which connotes the show is quite informal. The fact the show isn't scripted also supports this.

Nick Grimshaws radio show on radio one is very informal, he talks to all his guests like friends and communicates with his audience in a very relaxed and jokey way connoting the show has an informal comedic theme and isn't a serious show.

Content and meaning.

The content of the audiobook contains a long story which leads of with a sequel, It contains a narrator narrating the book 'True Blood Dead Until Dark' which is about mythical creatures in the real world set in the future.

There isn't much content in the jingle, it simply just says "This is Hallam Fm." which connotes it is informing which radio station is being listened to.

The Archer's radio drama contains a show filled with drama with upper class characters which entertains the audience.

Annie Mac's show contains mainly music but some talking from the presenter Annie Mac this connotes that the show is mainly to advertise music and that's why talking is kept very minimal, but she still talks in order to communicate and connect with her fans and listeners.

Nick Grimshaw's show involves music, interviews, quizzes and competitions and conversations and jokes with the audience, this connotes how Nick connects and communicates with his fans and listeners and how he keeps his audience entertained in the morning.
Genre.

The Genre of the the audiobook 'True Blood Dead Until Dark.' is a Drama/Fantasy about mythical creatures (mainly vampires) and how a telepathic waitress in the future reads the minds to investigate crime.

There is no specific genre of the jingle "This is Hallam FM" apart from the fact it is informative.

The genre of the radio drama 'The Archer's' is a drama. It entertains but has no comedic theme.

The genre of Annie Mac's podcast is contemporary music, it contains her music and remixes and has minimal conversation through out.

The genre of Nick Grimshaw's show is entertainment/comedy, it entertains as well as having a comedic theme, this keeps the audience want to listen to more and more and gives a good start to their day as it starts early in the morning.

Target audience.

The Target audience of the audio book 'True Blood Dead Until Dark.' is young adults to mid age adults. It is aimed at this certain generation because it contains very graphic features which may disturb young children and elders. The story can also be very violent and some times scary.

The target audience to the jingle "This is Hallam FM" is everyone, this is because it denotes what is on the radio and doesn't have much impact on certain ages or genders etc.

The target audience of the radio drama 'The Archer's' is stereotypically aimed at upper class people at the age of about 50 and above. This is because the language and music used is more from an older generation and wouldn't entertain younger people, also the show lacks younger characters.

The target audience for Annie Mac's podcast is both males and females from ages 15-25 this is because the music is remixed to entertain people from this generation as the genre  of the music is DJ style.

The target audience of Nick Grimshaw's show would be both male and female from ages 15-45, this is because the music played Is targeted to this generation and he interviews people between these ages.

Frequency.

The audiobook 'True Blood Dead Until Dark' was updated 12 times since 2008, but according to my research there will not be another one coming out unless the writer plots a plan to write a follow up story from the others.

When listening to different shows on Hallam FM I noticed that most jingles were updated and changed monthly, but the jingle "This is Hallam FM" remains the same throughout all shows.

The Archer's is updated frequently every week, but is available on the BBC website to catch up in between times.

Annie Mac's podcast is updated monthly and available to download for the rest of the month till updated.

Nick Grimshaw's show is updated every morning on a working day, this way it can entertain people on their way to work/school/college. It is also available to catch up with on the BBC website.

Production process.

The audiobook 'True Blood Dead Until Dark' will be recorded in a studio with recording equipment such as a microphone and editing software such as adobe audition and premier. This will be the same for the jingle "This is Hallam Fm."

The Archers will be recorded in a live studio with improvised props to create sound effects like wild life. It will also use editing software on adobe like audition and premier.

Annie Mac's music and remixes will be stored on a cart wall and she will have used equipment like mixing desks and microphones, she will have also used editing software on adobe.

Nick Grimshaw's show will be recorded in a live studio with lots of equipment, he will have used microphones for conversations with the audience and interviews. All music he plays and jingles would be stored on a cart wall so he can replay them when necessary, he will have also used software on adobe such as premier and audition.

The planning of a radio show will before the recording of each show so we know what the content will be, it could take a full day to plan it or it could take a couple of hours in a planning meeting which will involve everyone, for example the presenters and producers. During that day scripts would be wrote to give the presenters guide lines of what they are going to talk about. a group of people would have discussed topics which would be spoke about and good ideas to entertain the audience, they would also put music on the cart wall which they plan to play on the show, and sort out the jingles, which would be necessary to play through out the show. The running order will be sorted to make sure the show stays organised and the copyright needs to be took on board. For a community radio station, for example Sheffield live, it wouldn't take as many people to do this and only one person would be involved in the planning.

In order for the radio show to be broadcasted legal and ethical issues needs to be considered. Profanity, racism, sexism and anything that could be seen offensive needs to be removed or appease Ofcom guidelines. The radio show must avoid any slander or defamation or face legal proceedings.

No inappropriate language or anything that could offend or upset any one under the age of 18 should be included in the show until after the watershed which is 9'oclock.

Because of Ofcom, we have to address compliance in our pre- production meetings, this means we have to have content that won't offend listeners due to the water shed. this means the use of profanity, racism, sexism and anything else that could be seen as as offensive must be taken out, or if you broadcast it must meet or appease Ofcom guidelines. Everything must be planned before hand and meeting must be attended with both producers and presenters, mainly for commercial radio and content for the BBC. Copyright must be addressed in order to get permission, for example music content.
